5-Amino-1MQ (5-amino-1-methylquinolinium) is a small, membrane-permeable quinolinium compound designed as an inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT). NNMT methylates nicotinamide using S-adenosylmethionine, linking it to both the NAD+ salvage pathway and cellular methylation balance.

Preclinical research has examined 5-Amino-1MQ in cultured adipocytes, where NNMT inhibition was associated with changes in intracellular NAD+ and SAM levels and reduced lipogenesis, and in diet-induced obese mice, where its effects on adipose tissue and metabolic parameters were studied. More recent work has investigated NNMT inhibition in models of muscle stem-cell function in aged mice. Its selectivity over related methyltransferases has been examined in enzyme assays.
