Description
Glutathione is the tripeptide γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine. Its unusual γ-peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine protects it from most peptidases, and its free cysteine thiol makes it the most abundant low-molecular-weight thiol in mammalian cells.
In the laboratory, the reduced form (GSH) and its disulfide (GSSG) define one of the main cellular redox couples, and the GSH/GSSG ratio is a widely used marker of oxidative stress in cell and animal models. Glutathione is the substrate for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases, which makes it a standard reagent in enzyme assays. It is also used in redox buffers for protein refolding and disulfide-bond formation, and in studies of S-glutathionylation as a post-translational modification.
Keep sealed, cool and dry; solutions oxidise gradually in air.
