Description
Selank (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) is a synthetic analogue of tuftsin, an endogenous immunomodulatory tetrapeptide, extended at the C-terminus with a Pro-Gly-Pro sequence to increase its resistance to enzymatic degradation.
Preclinical research has examined selank in rodent models of anxiety-like behaviour and stress, and has investigated its influence on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampus. Gene-expression studies have reported effects on transcripts related to GABAergic neurotransmission, and other work has explored its inhibition of enkephalin-degrading enzymes and its immunomodulatory activity inherited from tuftsin. Comparisons with the parent tuftsin sequence help researchers separate the contribution of the Pro-Gly-Pro extension.
