Description
Semax (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) combines the ACTH(4-7) fragment with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide that slows enzymatic breakdown. It retains none of the hormonal activity of ACTH on the adrenal cortex.
Research on semax has focused on the nervous system. Rodent models of focal cerebral ischaemia have been used to investigate its effects on the expression of neurotrophins such as BDNF and their TrkB receptor, as well as on inflammatory and vascular gene-expression profiles. Behavioural studies in rats have examined attention and memory paradigms, and in-vitro work has explored its interaction with melanocortin receptors. Its close structural relationship to selank makes the pair a common subject of comparative gene-expression studies.
