Description
IGF-DES, more fully des(1-3)IGF-1, is a naturally occurring variant of insulin-like growth factor 1 that lacks the first three N-terminal residues (Gly-Pro-Glu), leaving a 67-amino-acid polypeptide. It was first isolated from bovine colostrum and has also been identified in brain tissue.
Removal of the tripeptide markedly lowers affinity for the IGF-binding proteins without substantially changing binding to the type 1 IGF receptor, so a larger free fraction is available in experimental systems that contain IGFBPs. Researchers use IGF-DES in cell-culture studies of IGF-1R signalling, in comparisons with native IGF-1 and IGF-1 LR3, and in work on the released N-terminal tripeptide (GPE), which is itself studied in neuronal models.
