Description
Pinealon is a synthetic tripeptide with the sequence Glu-Asp-Arg. It belongs to the family of short regulatory peptides developed within bioregulator research, in which di-, tri- and tetrapeptides are investigated for tissue-associated effects on gene expression.
Studies on pinealon have examined its effects in cultured cerebellar granule neurons and other cell types exposed to oxidative stress, measuring reactive oxygen species accumulation, caspase-3 activity and cell-cycle markers. Animal research has investigated offspring of rats subjected to prenatal hyperhomocysteinaemia. Investigators have also proposed that such short peptides may interact directly with DNA, a hypothesis still under study. It is frequently studied alongside other short peptides to compare sequence-specific effects in neuronal cultures.
