Description
Kisspeptin-10 is the shortest naturally occurring active form of kisspeptin, corresponding to the C-terminal ten amino acids of the KISS1 gene product. It binds the kisspeptin receptor KISS1R (also known as GPR54) with high affinity and is a full agonist.
The discovery that loss-of-function mutations in KISS1R disrupt puberty placed kisspeptin at the top of the reproductive neuroendocrine cascade. Rodent and primate studies have used kisspeptin-10 to investigate GnRH neuron activation, the release of luteinising hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, and the mechanisms behind pulsatile reproductive-hormone secretion. It is also studied in models of placental biology and cancer-cell migration.
