Description
AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside), also known as acadesine, is a nucleoside analogue that enters cells via adenosine transporters and is phosphorylated to ZMP. ZMP mimics AMP and activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) without altering cellular ATP levels.
This makes AICAR one of the standard tool compounds in AMPK research. It has been used in cell culture and animal studies to examine glucose uptake in skeletal muscle, fatty-acid oxidation, mitochondrial gene expression and the regulation of mTOR signalling. Researchers should note that some effects of AICAR are unrelated to AMPK, so appropriate controls are commonly used. It remains one of the most cited compounds in the energy-sensing literature.
