Description
Adipotide is a synthetic peptidomimetic built from two functional parts: a cyclic homing motif identified by in-vivo phage display, and a pro-apoptotic domain made of D-amino acids. The homing motif binds prohibitin, a protein displayed on the surface of endothelial cells in specific vascular beds.
Once bound, the conjugate is internalised and the cationic D-amino-acid domain disrupts mitochondrial membranes, triggering apoptosis in the targeted endothelial cells. Published preclinical studies in rodents and non-human primates have used adipotide as a model for ligand-directed vascular targeting, for mapping the prohibitin–annexin A2 receptor complex and for examining selective apoptosis of endothelial cell populations. It remains an experimental tool in vascular-biology research.
