Description
Thymosin alpha-1, also known by its non-proprietary name thymalfasin, is a 28-amino-acid peptide with an acetylated N-terminus. It was first isolated from thymosin fraction 5, a calf thymus extract, and corresponds to the N-terminal region of the larger precursor protein prothymosin alpha.
Preclinical research has investigated thymosin alpha-1 as a modulator of immune signalling. In-vitro studies have examined its interaction with Toll-like receptor pathways in dendritic cells and macrophages, its influence on T-cell maturation markers and its effects on cytokine production, while rodent infection models have been used to study immune parameters in vivo. Comparisons with prothymosin alpha and with shorter synthetic fragments help researchers locate the active region of the sequence.
